MediaTek device on my network
MediaTek is a Taiwanese chip company that makes processors and wireless chips for phones, TVs, routers and connected devices.
What MediaTek makes
MediaTek chips power many Android phones, smart TVs, streaming devices, routers and Wi-Fi adapters, and its Wi-Fi cards appear in some laptops. Most of those products use their own brand's address, so a MediaTek-registered address is relatively uncommon.
What the device on your network probably is
Most likely a router, Wi-Fi extender, USB Wi-Fi adapter, smart TV or streaming device. Less often a laptop or smart-home gadget.
How to work out which device it is
Check the labels on routers and extenders, and the network screens of TVs and boxes. Unplug USB Wi-Fi adapters to see if the entry disappears. Otherwise turn devices off one at a time.
Should you be worried
Nothing to worry about in itself; MediaTek made the chip inside something on your network. The name does not identify the product.
The app finds every device on the Wi-Fi you are on, at home or in a rental, and puts the vendor next to the hostname, the services it advertises and its open ports, which together usually name the product. Where it cannot tell, it says so instead of guessing. Get RECON for iPhone — one-time purchase, no account, nothing leaves the device.
