Port 8000: HTTP alternate
Port 8000 is a common alternate web port used by developer servers, dashboards and some cameras.
What runs on port 8000
Python's built-in http.server and Django's development server default to 8000, so it is where many web projects first run. Splunk's web interface uses it by default. Hikvision cameras and recorders use 8000 as their default port for their own client software.
On a home network
Hikvision cameras and NVRs, and many rebranded devices built on their firmware, commonly listen on 8000. A developer's laptop running a test server will show it too.
If port 8000 is reachable from the internet
A development server open to the internet can expose source files, debug pages or a whole directory. Cameras and recorders exposed on 8000 are scanned heavily, and older camera firmware has had serious remotely exploitable bugs. Neither should be exposed without a strong reason.
How to check whether it is open on your network
Check your router's port forwarding and UPnP table for 8000, especially if you set up remote viewing for a camera system. RECON's Port Scan will show which LAN devices answer on 8000.
To find out whether port 8000 is open on something in your home, and whether the internet can reach it, the app scans your Wi-Fi from your phone and checks your public address from the outside. It says what it checked and what it could not. Get RECON for iPhone — one-time purchase, no account, nothing leaves the device.
