Port 1194: OpenVPN
Port 1194 is the default port for OpenVPN, a widely used open-source VPN.
What runs on port 1194
OpenVPN servers listen on UDP 1194 by default, and can also be set to TCP or a different port such as 443 to get through restrictive networks. It uses TLS for key exchange and is supported by many routers, firewalls and commercial VPN providers.
On a home network
Routers with a built-in VPN server (for example many ASUS models and OpenWrt), NAS boxes with a VPN server package, and Raspberry Pis running PiVPN can listen on 1194.
If port 1194 is reachable from the internet
A VPN server is designed to be reachable from the internet, and a patched OpenVPN server with certificate-based login is a reasonable way to reach home remotely. The risk is outdated firmware or weak credentials on the device running it. If you did not set up a VPN, nothing should answer on 1194.
How to check whether it is open on your network
Check the VPN server section of your router or NAS. Note that UDP services often do not answer unknown probes, so an outside scan may not show 1194 even when it is running.
